On Edge

Things without edges don’t exist
and so, are products of the imagination,
And the thing to remember is that if you
Don’t see one the most probable reason
Is that you lack imagination

Love, sometimes, and sunlight - maybe
early in the afternoon
                     …there! Your turn.

Things I learned

In my youth I learned many important things from my Cousin Bruce and My Uncle Ed.

Cuz taught me:
Always wipe your glasses with your hanky before you blow your nose
Never sit down with a pocketful of caterpillars
Avoid kissing a moving rhino on the lips

Uncle Ed taught:
Its not a loin cloth its a groin rag
A conversation piece is a good looking woman that talks a lot
Balancing the check book is easy. Especially if you have a flat spot
on the top of your head for it.
To buy a week or so with your creditors just write out all of their
payment checks and place them each in the wrong envelope –
bah-dah-boom bah-dah-bing you’ve got some time to think up
a new scheme!

And with these faithful rules in mind i went on to learn these on my very own:
You cannot hide brocolli in a glass of milk
It is impossible to hold a cat and a hair dryer at the same time.
There is always one more idiot than you anticipated.

and when dressing in the morning:
First the pants THEN the shoes!

From the Angry Young Man Era

Bend a rule, break a vow
Kick the ancient sacred cow
Burn a school, rob a store
Buy some loving from a whore
Smoke some pot, buy a gun
Dodge the work and work at fun
Hate a friend, start a fight
Teach a child that might makes right
Keep your pride, sell your soul
Watch morality grow old
Sing of lust, scoff at love
Taunt the raven, kill the dove.

There will be several catch-up interludes here while dignity
Is afforded the opportunity to vanish in stages.

In Salon #1 Vanishing is accomplished to the tune of: "Gimmee, Gimmee,
                   Death'l Do Ya Sweet"

In Salon #2 The blessed passing steeps in deepest silence and total darkness
                     (neck if you like)

In Salon #3 it will vanish completely during the first interlude. Those
remaining interludes may be used for smoking and buying beer at
the Kiosks to the rear of the poem.

Late arrivals may be seated during any interlude that does not annoy the poet!

The BO Plan

Venezuela and Chavez are a great example of the BO Strategy

Chavez rails on and on at the U.S.’ crap over the past 50 years. Obama deflects with light humor (I was only 3 when many of these things happened so you can’t blame me.).  But he also brings to light that Chavez (and many of his supporters)  are wallowing in “old mud” and that Obama IS change in the making. Adumbrative posturing like this adds a shadow of carrot/stick possibilities for those listening with more than just ears.

Moreover it raises the following issues/sentiments:

   A. You can’t possibility expect to move forward and solve the current problems with your head embedded up the ass of the past.

  B. How can you not recognize that I am the living incarnation of the new attitudes that will begin the healing of the evils of the past: just look at how we are different.

  C. If you don’t see that the world is, today, connected (look at how many of your own constituents look with hopeful eyes to me) how are you going to be a part of and contribute to any important solutions?

If there is a way to bring us out of this morass into which we have marched, Obama is more likely than most to be able to to find it. If he does he will be recorded as a “World Changer”!!

So the strategy in action is, without precondition, to sit down with ANY world leader that will and discuss any and all issues however difficult. With each “sitting” enhancing BO’s popularity as he is seen working courageously and continuously at breaking down the barriers to success. He will “sally out to meet the adversary” demonstrating openness, courage, intelligence, keen insight and compassionate commitment to worldwide interconnectedness.

He and his team will continue to pursue this strategy and then pick and choose from this new collection of “contacts” those with which to “network” and deal in the short run. All the while continuing to ramp up the dialogue with an ever widening array of leaders in and out of the traditional political arena.

These meetings “showcase” his/our resolve to be open and connected while focusing all of our energies on solving the world-wide problems that face us. And do this while providing a direct and visible contrast between his forward-looking positive attitudes and those of the past-dwellers and fear mongers who would remain a part of the problem.

These meetings will also be learning opportunities for him and staff. They, for the first time, get to focus on the actual crisis issues from “the horses mouth”. Knowledge is power! The entire world is watching BO everyday while he seeks to deliver the most powerful of messages from the most powerful “bully pulpit” ever created: WORLD VIEW.

This he is doing right out in the open where all can see. He stands before largely adoring crowds beside their chosen (and less adored) leader and extends the open hand of positivism, friendly relationship and intelligent, willing cooperation; asking only that they please stop the ugliness and, rather, do what they can to advance our collective abilities to overcome adversity.

If success can be had over all this turmoil this mechanism is most likely to produce it. If not then it, at least, will bring us back onto the world stage interacting positively versus defending negatively.

If you always shoot for the moon you will at least wind up on top of more of the hills!

Real Riches

It is not wealth one asks for, but just enough to preserve one’s dignity, to work unhampered, to be generous, frank and independent.
W. Somerset Maugham, ‘Of Human Bondage’, 1915

As Ye Sow

Somewhere in the early 80s we turned the corner on corporate productivity in this country. We demonstrated our commitment to this new path by filling our top corporate Board Chair and CEO slots with legal and financial people in place of production wizards and marketing mavens. The reasons that these moves make the case for lower productivity is nestled deeply in the notion that, one always tends to use the tool with which one is most familiar (If your only tool is a hammer then every problem starts to look like a nail…don’t give your chipped crystal or china to the carpenter unless you want it pounded!)

We write down massive debt (even cheat), acquire until we choke, merge until we are unrecognizable, tend the bottom line until there is virtually no top line and kiss the idea of building stuff “TaTa”! With copies of the likes of Porter or Drucker under their arms they worked to Get customer satisfaction at an all time high by kissing their collective butts and giving away the store in a one-quarter-of-profit-three-quarters-of-cash-flow shell game. With monkey-in-the-mirror precision they jammed lower margins down the throats of smaller vendors and merged/acquired the larger ones in any attempt to avoid iminent total collapse.

They failed!

Sucked into a “service” market, a “wal-mart “ retail bloodfest and the lowest productivity in history our deep American know-how is engaged in imagining how we can avoid the work and still sell stuff cheaper than the third world. Innovation is bust, quality gone and motivation barely extant. A cynic would be quick to announce that Osama won, but the truth is that we did this to ourselves with our avarice and penchant for glitz. Our political system is based on morally corrupt concepts that undermine every worthwhile endeavor. Extreme competition, something-for-nothing greed and showboat self-agrandizing.

If we give, even scant, serious thought to “who brung us”; Wal-Mart is the culmination of years of “price-leadership” marketing as consumerism slid into position at the markets helm in place of capitalism. We can’t avoid going offshore for ever increasing amounts of goods and services because our politicians are unwilling to deal openly with the idea that Americans need to make far too much money in order to support our government excesses and over-heated consumerism. When you find the backpack too heavy as you climb the mountain there are but two solutions:

need less or get stronger!
